Little Theatres & Amateur Drama Groups
The Woodhouse Players, Leytonstone
Described by themselves as "the friendliest amateur drama group in
East London
", the Woodhouse Players have been doing plays and pantomimes (and even making the odd short film) since 1983. The group is committed to being as accessible and democratic as possible: membership fees are low and all members get a say in which shows they put on. In the past these have ranged from classics and comedies through to new writing originating in the group by way of some of the more offbeat 20th century repertoire, including Berkoff, Fo and Brecht.
Until 2002 the group performed four shows a year, but since then we have been increasing our activities, with more opportunities for members than ever: in 2007 there will be seven main productions and a number of small-scale one-off shows plus a programme of workshops and social events for members.
Highbury Little Theatre, Birmingham
Highbury Little Theatre is situated in a residential area of north Birmingham. The Highbury Theatre Centre caters for people of all ages from the very young to those who have retired. Everything concerned with community activity, theatre and the arts has a place. The resident company are the Highbury Players who were established in 1924 and who were the founders of the Highbury Theatre Centre.
South London Theatre, West Norwood
The South London Theatre is a large, well-established, repertory-style non-professional theatre based in West Norwood, south east London and a member of the Little Theatre Guild of Great Britain. The theatre was founded in 1967 in an old Victorian fire station and has been thriving ever since. They operate as a members' club and are therefore always keen to attract new faces to our organisation.
They run two theatre spaces, called the Bell Theatre and Prompt Corner. The Bell Theatre is a traditional style proscenium arch theatre seating 96 and Prompt Corner is a flexible studio space seating between 30 and 60 people.
The Loft Theatre, Leamington Spa
The Loft Theatre Company has been producing live theatre in Leamington Spa since 1922. Although they have earned a strong reputation for the professional quality of our productions, they are almost exclusively unpaid volunteers, devoting their time and energy to the theatre simply because they love it.
Each year, they produce around nine shows in the main, 200 seat auditorium, and at least six in the smaller, studio theatre, covering a wide range of theatrical styles, from classical to modern, from tragedy to farce. Whether you like to be shocked, enlightened or simply entertained, you will find something for you at the theatre.
The Richmond Shakespeare Society
The Richmond Shakespeare Society is a highly-respected amateur dramatic society which was founded in 1934 to perform Shakespeare’s plays annually in the open air.
The Mary Wallace Theatre is named in affectionate memory of a previous Secretary whose bequest in 1977 made possible the first positive steps towards the acquisition of a permanent home. Much of the work in converting a derelict mission hall into a welcoming theatre club and well-equipped theatre was done by the Members themselves. Since it opened in 1981, the theatre has gained a unique place in Twickenham's community life. Her legacy, with further help from the Borough of Richmond-Upon-Thames Council and many other benefactors, provided the core of funding for the theatre project.
